Do you suspect that your pool water may be leaking? Are having to refill your pool water every week or two and can’t figure out why?

Here’s a surefire way to test if your pool is leaking and how quickly, using nothing more than a five-gallon bucket and a roll of masking tape or marker:

The Swimming Pool Bucket Test

1.    Fill a five-gallon bucket with pool water to about 3-4 inches from the top.
2.    With your pool water at normal level, place the bucket on the first or second step of the pool without immersing it.
3.    Using your masking tape or a marker, mark the water level on the inside of the bucket.
4.    Turn off your pump system and mark the water level of your pool on the outside of the bucket.
5.    Turn your pump back on, making sure the auto/manual fill valve is off.
6.    Let the bucket sit in your pool for at least 24 hours and compare the water levels on both the inside and outside of the bucket.

Here’s how to determine whether or not your swimming pool is leaking, or if you are simply experiencing reduced water levels caused by evaporation:

Check the outside mark. If the pool water level has gone down more than the inside water level, there may be a leak. If both the inside and outside water levels have decreased at the same rate, there’s a good chance you are experiencing nothing more than evaporation.

Note: The bucket test must only be done on clear nights, so check the forecast. If it rains, the pool bucket test won’t work.
